Tinplate or aluminum: two metals with different properties
The term “iron” actually refers to tinplate in virtually all packaging projects. It is a mild steel coated on both sides with a very thin layer of tin, which protects the metal from oxidation and makes it suitable for food contact once varnished. This structure gives tinplate its rigidity, its ability to be deep-drawn, and its resistance to crimping—three properties that no other packaging material combines to the same degree.
Aluminum follows the opposite logic: it is lighter, does not rust, but is more prone to deformation. It is used in small-capacity containers, cosmetic cases, and screw-top cans—where lightness and resistance to corrosion take precedence over mechanical strength. The choice between tinplate and aluminum is rarely based on price alone; it depends on the stresses the container will endure between the filling plant and the end consumer.
What the product to be packaged requires of the container
Metal packaging isn’t chosen from a catalog, but rather based on the properties of the product it is intended to protect. Three factors drive the decision: sensitivity to moisture and light, whether the formula is oily or acidic, and the target shelf life. Everything else—size, design, and finish—is decided afterward.
Dry goods, cookies, and candy
For cookies or confectionery, the key challenges are moisture absorption and breakage. The metal tin addresses both issues at once, as it protects and displays the product simultaneously: its opaque, rigid walls shield the contents from impacts during transport and from light on store shelves. A snap-on lid is sufficient in most cases, provided the gap between the body and the lid is properly controlled. Chocolate requires extra care, as it absorbs odors: the interior coating must be odorless and fully cured.
Fatty, moist, or acidic foods
As soon as the product is fatty, brined, or acidic, the interior coating becomes the critical factor in the project. Caviar, canned fish, or tomato-based products can chemically corrode the metal if the coating is not suitable for this type of product. This is where crimping comes into its own: only this type of closure provides a truly airtight seal that is compatible with pasteurization or sterilization.
Cosmetics, Skincare, and Fragrances
In cosmetics, the container serves both a protective function and as a decorative case. Balms, bar soaps, and sticks work well with aluminum, which is lightweight and unaffected by bathroom humidity. Here, the quality of the finish takes precedence over mechanical strength: an uneven surface, a sharp edge, or a lid that’s difficult to open are enough to detract from a premium product that the rest of its positioning is designed to highlight.
Technical Products and Industrial Applications
Outside the food industry, metal is still chosen for what no other material does as well: containing without reacting. Inks, varnishes, cleaning products, parts, and components require a leak-proof, non-deformable, and stackable container. Size and ease of handling are therefore more important than decoration, and the packaging must withstand repeated opening without losing its leak-proof seal or developing dents along its edges.
The lid: the key component of protection
The closure type alone determines the actual level of protection achieved. The simple and economical snap-on lid is suitable for dry products that do not require an airtight seal. The hinged lid makes it easy to reopen the container and eliminates the risk of loss, making it a good choice for repeated use and for containers intended for long-term storage. The clip-on lid provides a seal that is close to an airtight one but does not quite match that of a crimped seal.
Sealing falls into a different category: it makes the container tamper-proof and compatible with heat treatment. However, it requires destructive opening, which means the container can no longer be reused for storage—a feature that is often a key selling point in premium projects. The key question to ask up front is simple: Should the consumer be able to reseal the container, yes or no? That answer alone eliminates half the options.
Size, capacity, and shelf presence
The rectangular shape optimizes carton fill and linear meter efficiency, whereas the round shape better withstands pressure. A rectangular tin is easier to palletize and store and offers a larger flat surface for decoration. A round shape is better suited for deep drawing and screw-on lids. A rectangular tin remains the most common compromise in the cookie and gourmet food industries.
The capacity should be based on the actual product being packaged, not on the geometric volume of the container. The same volume does not hold the same mass of cookies, tea, or candy, and improperly calculated headspace results either in breakage or the perception of a large, half-empty box. The standard product line covers most needs; dedicated tooling is justified only when the shape itself becomes a brand asset.
Common Sizes and Uses of a Metal Box
Certain types of metal tins have become so widespread that they’ve given their name to the format. The cookie tin—wide and shallow—protects fragile products and can later be reused as a storage container. The sugar box and spice boxes, which are smaller, make use of the same container design adapted for different products. The elongated case is suitable for bars, pens, and promotional items, while heart-shaped boxes and small, low-capacity boxes are typically used for gifts and confectionery.
This variety of formats explains why metal tins have become a communication medium as much as a container. A confectioner who offers their product line in both a large box for sharing and small individual boxes creates a consistent visual identity on the shelf. Designing a reusable tin means accepting that the packaging will continue to enhance your products long after the purchase—something no disposable solution can achieve. The ideal gift, whether in a candy shop or a gourmet food store, is often one where the container is kept.
